Dear Peter Bottomley MP,

RE: Early Day Motion 92: Beak-trimming of laying hens

This is a personal thank-you for adding your support to EDM 92 to uphold the 2011 ban on beak trimming. This issue is of particular importance to me and, as a local constituent, I value your support.
I have also checked in the Daily Telegraph today which has published a list of MPs who are required to pay back excess claimed expenses and see that your name is not there, so I have to presume that you have not claimed expenses to which you are not entitled or which are dubious. I thank you for this also since it seems that most MPs have been doing this.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr Bottomley,

I am writing to thank you for all your support for people with autism over the last few years. As a result of your support for the Autism Act, Fulfilling and rewarding lives - an adult autism strategy was published today.

The strategy sets out a long list of actions to improve health, social care and other public services for people with autism. These include measures to improve diagnosis, to tackle chronic rates of unemployment and to train staff providing services for adults with autism.

This is a landmark moment for the 500,000 people with autism in the UK and we are very grateful for your help in achieving this.

Please find attached a draft press release which you can use to publicise your support for the strategy locally. Do let me know if you would like us to make any changes and if you would prefer for us to contact the local media on your behalf.

If you would like further information about the key recommendations in the strategy, please go to www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=2608&a=21323.

Many thanks for your support throughout this process.

Kind regards,

Ellen

Adults with autism need: a job when they can work; benefits when they can't; and a government that leads the way.

Thank you.

By coincidence I have already done what you suggest and today the WWF people
in parliament were kind enough to thank me.

It is good that we agree though to be open with you, I would have done it
even if no one understood why it is important.

Subject: Please support WWF's Earth Hour and sign EDM 1045

Dear Mr Bottomley,

Last year, on Saturday March 28th 2009 Big Ben was one of the centrepieces
of WWF's Earth Hour, a dramatic endorsement of the commitment of our elected
politicians of the need for action on climate change.

This year, Nick Hervey MP, of the House of Commons Commission has said that
they have "no plans" for Big Ben or the House of Commons to take part; as it
takes place "on a Saturday" (like last year). It would surely be a shameful
symbol of indifference if Big Ben were to be the only major landmark in that
area of London (Trafalgar Square and the London Eye are both taking part for
example) not to dim its lights as last year.

Can I ask you, as my MP to show your support for action on climate change by
signing EDM 1045

If you have already signed EDM 1045 then well done and thank you.
Otherwise, I look forward to hearing your response.

Yours sincerely,  (Name and address deleted)

Subject: RE: Libel Reform Campaign

Thanks.

I spoke at the Parliamentary campaign  launch, at the Parliamentary meeting yesterday morning and I have agreed to speak on Sunday at the Libel Gig -doing my bit for you.
Peter Bottomley
0207219 5060; 07831 323333.

Dear Peter Bottomley MP,

I am writing as one of your constituents who is deeply concerned about the effect our libel laws have on medicine, science, journalism and literature. I believe English libel law cripples free expression both in the UK and abroad.

Freedom to criticise and question, in strong terms and without malice, is the cornerstone of argument and debate, whether in scholarly journals, on websites, in newspapers or elsewhere. Our current libel laws inhibit debate and stifle free expression. They discourage writers from tackling important subjects and thereby deny us the right to read about them.

The law is so biased towards claimants and so hostile to writers that London has become known as the libel capital of the world. The rich and powerful bring cases to London on the flimsiest grounds (libel tourism), because they know that 90% of cases are won by claimants. Libel laws intended to protect individual reputation are being exploited to
suppress fair comment and criticism.

The cost of a libel trial is often in excess of £1 million and one study has calculated it is 140 times more expensive on average than libel cases in mainland Europe. Publishers (and individual journalists, authors, academics, performers and blog-writers) cannot risk such extortionate costs, which means that they are forced to back down, withdraw and
apologise for material they believe is true, fair and important to the public.

The recent English PEN and Index on Censorship report has shown that there is an urgent need to amend the law to provide a stronger, wider and more accessible public interest defence. Sense About Science have shown that the threat of libel action leads to self-censorship in scientific and medical writing. I would urge you to back the campaign by English PEN, Index on Censorship and Sense About Science for libel law reform.
If you agree that there is a need for reform, and you are able to sign EDMs I would urge you to sign cross-party EDM 423 Libel Law Reform - which already has over 150 fully cross-party signatures - to send a clear message from Parliament to your constituents that you are committed to reforming these unjust laws.

Yours,
